Gallus Glasgow is a digital project managed by Gemma & Rachel for Glasgow City Heritage Trust (GCHT). It dives into Glasgow’s ‘Gilded Age’ during the Victorian era, with a focus on Thomas Sulman, the artist behind the 1864 Bird’s Eye View of Glasgow.

The challenge was to make Glasgow’s history exciting for today’s audience. We needed to make Sulman’s 1864 map come to life, engaging people in the city’s rich heritage online while we were all stuck at home during the pandemic.

We digitised, annotated, and animated Sulman’s map, turning it into an interactive experience. This map became the heart of a seven-month outreach and event programme from September 2021 to March 2022.

The project was a hit – with over 500k impressions on social media. It celebrated Glasgow’s ‘Gilded Age’ and showcased its importance in understanding Glasgow’s heritage. By highlighting the city’s artistic and industrial achievements during this time, the project brought history to life and promoted Glasgow as a must-visit place for history and culture buffs.

Additionally, our animation was a finalist in the Moving Imagery Design/Animation Design Category at the Scottish Design Awards 2022., showing our commitment to engaging storytelling through digital projects.

This project was made possible by generous funding from Hugh Fraser Foundation, Norbulk Shipping UK Ltd, Culture & Business Scotland Fund and Glasgow City Heritage Trust.
